Welcome to Glenlyon Norfolk School!
The search for an independent school that is the right 'fit' for your child (and your family) will be an interesting, exciting, and, sometimes an overwhelming one. For you will discover that there is much that independent schools have in common -- academic challenge and rigour, many athletics and fine arts opportunities, small class sizes, and nurturing environments. Yet each school is unique and it is the uncovering of what is unique about each school that can be the challenge.
How is GNS unique? Well, GNS is the only school in Victoria and on Vancouver Island that is both an International Baccalaureate World School and a member school of the Round Square. What does this mean? It means that GNS teachers and staff have embraced an internationally recognized 'gold' standard of education. The IB is also an inquiry-based approach to teaching which means children in JK to Grade 12 are actively engaged in their learning. Our membership in the Round Square is an articulation of our ideals which include internationalism, democracy, environmental stewardship, outdoor activity, leadership and service.
GNS is also a day school -- a school we all come to in the morning and leave at the end of the day. Parents are partners in their children's education. International students are welcomed into school families who become their second families. Their Canadian experience transcends a school experience to become a cultural, family one.
GNS has a configuration unique in Canada -- all-boys/all-girls classes Kindergarten through to Grade 5. This structure allows boys and girls to learn how they learn best as young children, but when they are ready, they move to some coed classes in Grade 6.
GNS is quite possibly the only JK to 12 school in Canada with an ocean-side campus. Marine adventure is alive and well at GNS.
